Remote Connectivity
Computek, rendering an all-encompassing ICT service on a national level as well as in sub-Saharan African regions,
has expanded its ICT capabilities solutions portfolio into VSAT technology which offers remote connectivity. Satellite
communications, a specialised and advanced form of technology, allows for continual connectivity where physical
communication lines are not available. Computek has a fully deployed Satellite VMesh network connected to the
Government Common Core Network (GCCN) authorised by SITA. VMesh is the most secure form of VSAT configuration.
The connectivity involves installation of 1.8m to 2.4m dishes on the clients’ remote sites to the existing 3.8m dish
installed at the main site.
Cost Effective and Secure Connectivity to GCCN
The VSAT / VMesh solution provides a cost effective and secured Layer 2 connection,
which is already connected into the GCCN. The use of satellite technology is to
provide internet, data, video conferencing and telephony services to any location
in South Africa. It is an effective means to minimise the digital divide and provide
world-class service to the most remote location.
VSAT and how it works
VSAT systems use a satellite connection as a high speed digital link between
the customer location and the internet service provider. The data travels from the
satellite equipment (dish) at the customer location, to the satellite, and then to the
teleport for routing to the internet.
VSAT Connectivity
VSAT forms part of wireless technology solutions such as CDMA2000, Wi-Fi (802.
11a/b/g) and Wi-Max, and is most often used where a physical communication
line is not available.
In terms of creating a secure Government network, connectivity to a site with a link
to the SITA-managed GCCN infrastructure (regardless of technology used), is based
on policy which requires that all link/s be configured strictly as Layer 1 or 2.
Linkway System and Technology
Computek utilises Linkway®, a no-hub VSAT system which allows for cost
effective integration of a variety of applications into one network: in mesh,
star or multi-star hybrid topologies. Adaptive, on demand bandwidth and
advanced coding engineered into Linkway®, provides cost effective and
efficient broadband connections. Transponder costs are saved through
this method and allows for seamless connection to the network applications
using IP, ATM, Frame Relay, and ISDN protocols. The Linkway® IP terminal
is interoperable over C - or Ku-band fixed satellite services, satellites with
fixed beam, split-beam or cross strapped configurations
Benefits of Computek VSAT Vmesh Solutions
The advantage for the Public Sector utilising Computek’s VSAT net work
is unlimited. Whilst security and affordability are top of the list of benefits,
other technical and application benefits include:
• Connecting multiple distributed sites
• Cost effective bandwidth-on-demand up to 100Mbps
• Easy upgradable bandwidth: 64kb to more than 100MB
• Extended wireless VPN
• Guaranteed minimum latency
• Inter-site mesh connectivity
• Layer 2 secure packet switched frame relay service
• Mobility
• No double hopping - point-to-point connectivity (Layer 2)
• Remote site connectivity
• Round clock, 24/7/365 network monitor and management services
• Secure data transmission
• Ubiquitous network footprint
Secure transmission of data at high speed has set higher technology standards!
Linkway System and Technology
Computek’s technical strength is both in operating the equipment and in
planning and executing large scale projects and installations.
Satellite communications, being very advanced technology, requires
competence and strategic knowledge for successful planning and
implementation. Computek’s capability includes a number of components
within satellite technology.
